Degree Offered
M.A.- Marriage and Family Therapy
Format: Campus
Program Description:
Seton Hill University Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) Program is guided by three underlying principles which are:
a relational/systemic emphasis;
attention to and integration of issues of diversity; and
a self-of-the-therapist focus
A relational/systemic emphasis requires the conceptualization of human problems both relationally and contextually. In the shift of perspective from the "person is the problem" to the "problem is the problem", we view the ecological context of clients as tantamount in shaping the context of therapy. Through this lens, we are able to ask the question "who is invested in changing the problem as well as who may be invested in not changing." Thus, the larger systems acting in clients' lives, such as culture, healthcare, justice, school, work, outside agencies, etc., become participants in the therapeutic process and potential resources for the clients and therapists as they work together for change. This relational\systemic emphasis is at the heart of all that we believe, think, teach, and practice.
