Program Description:
Sacred Heart University offers a program of study leading to Connecticut teacher certification in Elementary education (grades K - 6), as well as Secondary education (grades 7-12) in biology, business, chemistry, English, general science, history and social studies, math and Spanish. Credits completed toward teacher certification may be applied to the Master of Arts in Teaching degree (MAT).
Teacher Certification candidates gain valuable experience in our tuition-paid, full-time Internship program in which we partner with numerous school districts in the local area. Interns are placed in a school system for one year to serve as instructional assistants and to complete the student teaching requirement, while pursuing their graduate studies in evening classes.

Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must have a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) for admission to the Teacher Certification program. Applicants who do not meet this requirement may be required to complete prerequisite coursework before being considered for admission into the Graduate Education program.
All applicants are required to submit passing scores on the Reading, Writing, and Mathematics sections of the Praxis I examination or obtain an official waiver from the Connecticut State Department of Education.

International Student Requirements:
International graduate student applicants must complete an Application Supplement for International Graduate Students provided by the Office of Graduate Admissions.
Foreign students holding an undergraduate degree from outside of the United States must have their academic credentials evaluated by an independent organization. Currently, Sacred Heart University only accepts course-by-course evaluations from the World Education Service (WES). You can review their procedure and download the necessary documents from: http://www.wes.org
All international graduate applicants for whom English is not their native language are required to submit an official test score reprot for one of the following exams: TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, PTE or iTEP exam. Sacred Heart University requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 on the paper-based test or 80 on the TOEFL iBT; minimum score of 6 on the IELTS required; minimum score of 80 on the MELAB required; minimum score of 5 on the iTEP.
