Program Description:

School Counseling

This 48-credit master's degree program prepares school counselors to perform school counseling services in grades preschool through 12. These duties include services such as study and assessment of individual pupils with respect to their status, abilities, interest and needs; counseling with administrators, teachers, students and parents regarding personal, social educational and vocational plans and programs; and developing cooperative relationships with community agencies in assisting children and their families.

Counseling Psychology

The Counseling Psychology Program trains scientist-practitioners to contribute to psychology's knowledge base and adapt their attendant clinical work for the prevention and remediation of human problems and for the development of human potential. The thrust of clinical training is on viewing professional activity as educating persons to cope with development and life's challenges. The orientation is preventive and developmental insofar as it focuses on persons' strengths as well as normative transitions and issues which occur at different points of the life span.

Students inculcate an educative stance in their work as they prepare for professional activities which emphasize teaching skills that enable persons to prevent future problems, mobilize their personal or environmental resources, and enhance the quality of their coping with developmental tasks. The program accomplishes its objectives with a multicultural-family focus.

International Student Requirements:

TOEFL or IELTS is required of all applicants whose undergraduate education was completed in a non-English speaking country. Even if you hold a master's-level degree from a US or other English-speaking country you must still take the TOEFL or IELTS test. Scores must be current within 2 years of the applied semester.
