Program Information

Degree Offered

M.A.- Health Care Ethics, Certificate of Graduate Study in Health Care Ethics

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The Certificate of Graduate Study in Health Care Ethics is offered via the internet and consists of three courses that link clinical and organizational issues with both theory and practice. The first course, Introduction to Health Care Ethics, focuses on conceptual foundations of health care ethics. The second course, Major Issues in Health Care Ethics, focuses on ethical issues in end of life care. The third course, Seminar in Health Care Ethics, focuses on practical and theoretical issues in clinical ethics consultation. The certificate sequence is designed to provide students an opportunity to gain more in-depth education in clinical ethics while maintaining a regular work schedule. A major goal of the sequence is to prepare students to become educators in ethics consultation at their home institutions. Because the sequence is entirely online, it is accessible anywhere an internet connection is available.

The Master of Arts in Health Care Ethics combines the internet courses of the Certificate of Graduate Study in Health Care Ethics with courses in medical sociology, health economics, health care organization, and health law. This provides students with a more comprehensive experience in the context of ethics in the health care environment. Regular rounding and consultation in health care ethics are significant parts of the experience. The program is designed for those who want to complement their professional training (chaplains, lawyers, nurses, administrators, and physicians) with work in ethics. The program currently requires some time in residence, but may be completed on a part-time basis.
