Program Description:

The master of science in networking and systems administration enables the matriculated student to study, develop, and become proficient in the practices, methodologies, and techniques used in the management of a modern IT infrastructure. The focus is on enterprise-scale problems and solutions, addressing the needs of a medium- to large organization.

The underlying principle of this program is that effective technical leadership in a modern enterprise relies on a combination of technical knowledge and an understanding of basic business concepts and processes. This program is designed for full- or part-time study through distance (online learning) or on-campus instruction. Students who take at least three courses per quarter are considered full-time and may be able to complete their coursework in one year. Part-time students may take as few as one course per quarter, and may take up to four years to complete their coursework. All students are required to complete a master’s thesis. The time required to complete the thesis varies according to the scope of the thesis, however two quarters is typical.

Admission requirements

Applicants should have a baccalaureate or equivalent degree from an accredited institution and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (B). Applicants must submit two professional recommendations.

Applicants from foreign universities must submit Graduate Record Examination scores. The GRE score also is recommended for those whose undergraduate grade point average is less than 3.0. Visa forms cannot be issued by RIT for part-time or distance education.

Applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination; a minimum score of 570 (paper-based), 230 (computer-based), or 88 (Internet-based) is required. Applicants with a lower TOEFL score may be admitted conditionally and may be required to complete a prescribed program in English, along with a reduced program course load.

International Student Requirements:

Will be required to have prior academic performance equivalent to a 3.0 GPA or a first class diploma from an accredited four-year program. The GRE (standard examination) will be required for all foreign applicants. International applicants will also be required to submit official transcripts of undergraduate/graduate study in original form, and if not originally in English, an official, certified copy of transcripts translated into English will be required. Applicants whose native language is other than English will be required to submit a TOEFL score to demonstrate strong English language skills. A score of at least 570 (paper based), 230 (computer based), or 88 (internet based) will be required. Students failing to meet these criteria will not be accepted until TOEFL criteria met. The Michigan test will be required for course placement, and the applicants will be required to take a prescribed program of study in English along with a reduced course load in the program if necessary.
