Program Information

Degree Offered

PhD in Engineering Education

Format: Campus

Program Description:

Through Purdue's doctoral program in engineering education—the world's first academic program in this growing field—a committed community of scholars is developing a research base for guiding engineering education practice, developing curricula, assessing how students learn, and moving those findings into the classroom of tomorrow's engineers. Academic requirements for the program include (1) course selections across four categories: Engineering Education Foundations, Technical Engineering, Research Preparation, and Engineering Education Specialization; (2) the preparation and defense of a dissertation; and (3) the demonstration of selected graduate competencies. Students will use a portfolio as the primary vehicle for demonstrating attainment of these competencies, whose aim is to help each student develop the ability to create and synthesize knowledge; think critically and reflectively; master written and oral communication skills; engage in professional development; participate actively in a professional field or engineering education; and apply their knowledge of instruction, curriculum design, and assessment of engineering science, problem-solving, and design appropriately. Graduates of the program will find wide-ranging career opportunities, from academia to nonprofit work to industry. Among employment options: faculty positions in engineering, engineering education, or STEM education; directorships of teaching and learning centers; and workforce development and training.
