Program Description:

The Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering offers programs of study and research in the general fields of optimization, stochastic models, statistics, dynamic resource management, transportation, financial risk management, derivative pricing, and other applications of engineering and finance. Three degree programs are available: the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in operations research and financial engineering, the Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.), and a one-year Master of Engineering (M.E.). Each student must be admitted to one of these three degree programs. Ph.D. candidates are required to pass the general examination by the end of their second year. Usually, beyond the general examination, two to three years are necessary for completion of a suitable dissertation. Upon completion of these studies and acceptance of the dissertation by the department, the candidate is admitted to the final public oral examination. The M.S.. program has a strong research focus, which is reflected in the requirement of a thesis. The course requirements are fulfilled by successfully completing ten 1-semester courses, two of which are required research courses. The M.S.. degree is usually completed within two academic years of full-time study. The M.E. degree is offered to those students who are interested in the practical aspects of engineering. The student fulfills the requirements by successfully completing eight 1-semester courses selected from a list of courses relevant to the program; a thesis is not required. The M.E. degree is usually completed in one academic year of full-time study.
