Master of Geographic Information Systems
The award-winning master of geographic information systems (MGIS) degree is a 35-credit program of study designed to help you become a leader in your industry while providing you with the convenience and flexibility that your current responsibilities demand. Offered by Penn State’s World Campus, you get the benefits of online courses – studying whenever and wherever you want – plus the ongoing interaction with expert educators and fellow graduate students.
The curriculum, including challenging, highly practical projects, will give you cutting-edge GIS tools and methods that you can apply to your real-time professional work. Part time students can earn the 35-credit degree in three years by taking one course at a time and four courses per year. Each course is ten weeks long, with terms beginning in January, April, July, and October.
• First-year courses help you develop the information literacy and technical competencies needed to become a knowledgeable and skillful user of desktop geographic information technologies.
• Second-year courses help prepare you for leadership in your organization in designing, specifying, and managing complex geographic information infrastructures.
• Third-year courses allow you to complete electives and an independent study project through which you will make substantive contributions to your organization, ultimately communicating these contributions to a professional audience.
We’ll help you navigate the degree process with confidence. You’ll have a faculty adviser from the day you’re accepted into the program through the day you graduate. Our faculty — experienced online professionals from Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences — are accessible to all students via email, phone, online discussion forums and chat space, and web conferencing that enables interaction with one another in real-time, using voice, text, and video. Many faculty also have years of professional experience in the field; that rich experience helps enhance the online classroom.
Penn State has a history of 100+ years of distance education and more than a decade of experience in online learning. We strive to create an online learning environment that brings you as close to the face-to-face experience as possible.
