Program Description:
Systems engineering is a holistic approach to managing complex engineering projects that was first developed in the aerospace industry and the military, and has been adopted by professionals in other engineering disciplines. It applies to many types of systems-- large systems such as power plants; small systems, such as circuit components, as well as to computer hardware and software. It is a big-picture view that considers every aspect of a project, from costs and environmental impact, to time lines and life expectancy of equipment.
Penn State's online master's degree in Systems Engineering consists of 12 courses (36 credits) that emphasize the identification, modeling, analysis, architecture, integration and management of complex systems and processes. The program spans six continuous semesters with each semester containing two seven-week terms so it can be completed in as little as two years.
