Degree Offered

M.S.;, Ph.D.

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The Department of Entomology offers qualified candidates excellent opportunities for graduate study and research leading to the Master of Arts, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees with concentrations in various basic and applied fields within the discipline. In keeping with traditional areas ofstrength at the University, a number of major research programs in entomology deal with problems in agriculture, forestry, and environmental quality. Integrated pest management techniques are emphasized in the solution of many of these problems. Environmental quality research is oriented toward forest and aquatic ecosystems, and opportunities for study are supported by excellent field and laboratory facilities, including an aquatic insect laboratory and a forest insect research laboratory. Ample opportunities exist for practical research experience in a variety of agriculturally oriented problem areas: acarology, biological control, extension entomology, integrated pest management, medical and public health entomology, systems design, pollination ecology, and apiculture. A departmental computer facility and modern laboratory facilities are available to support this research. To complement the many applied fields of study, basic research opportunities exist in ecology, biological control, ecotoxicology, classical biosystematics, molecular systematics, physiology and molecular biology. Excellent facilities are available to support basic research, including the outstanding Systematic Entomology Laboratory consisting of more than two and one-half million specimens of insects and acarines.
