Program Description:
Applicants to the COAS Chemical Oceanography program must have an undergraduate degree in chemistry or another discipline of science, with at least one year each of general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry. Additional background in differential equations, probability, and statistics is desirable. Prior exposure to environmental study through independent, undergraduate laboratory, or field experience provides excellent preparation for our program but is not a requirement.
Graduate education in the Chemical Oceanography program incorporates course work and research in descriptive, analytical, and theoretical chemistry and in parts of biological, physical, and geological oceanography, reflecting the broad interdisciplinary nature of this field. During their first year, all incoming Chemical Oceanography students take core chemical, physical, biological, and geological oceanography courses with students from other oceanography disciplines. Specialized courses in such areas as isotope geochemistry, advanced thermodynamics, organic geochemistry, radiochemistry, pollution chemistry, and instrumental methods of chemical analysis are subsequently elected to fulfill the curricular requirements and needs of individual students.
Analytical facilities within the college include inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (high-resolution multi-collector and standard versions) with ion chromatrography and laser ablation capabilities, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, high-performance liquid chromatography with spectrofluorimetric and diode-array spectrophotometric modes of detection, dual-inlet and continuous-flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry, and extensive computer networks.
International Student Requirements:
All international student applicants must provide official English language test scores as described in the table below, unless they meet the criteria listed under "Exempt from English Language Testing". ETS institution code for OSU is 4586.
Exempt from English Language Testing:
Individuals who have completed a bachelors or masters degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or other English speaking country (See list below).
Individuals who are in the process of earning an advanced degree from an accredited institution in the U.S. or another English speaking country may be conditionally admitted. Citizens of the following countries: Australia, Belize, Canada, Ghana**, New Zealand, Scotland, West Indies, and United Kingdom. ** Exemptions for citizens of African countries are considered on a case-by-case basis if the medium of instruction is English.
