Program Description:

The Department of Dance at the Ohio State University is a community of diverse individuals gathered around a common nexus of inquiry; the rich and complex phenomenon of dance. The department has a faculty of 17 professionals, supported by a dedicated staff, adjunct educators, guest artists and scholars.

The Ohio State Department of Dance graduate program offers students opportunities to study and conduct research through the synthesis of three major spheres: creative activity, theoretical inquiry and physical practice. Both grounded in the practice of dance, the MFA and the PhD programs place varying emphases on these spheres and their overlaps.

MFA

The Ohio State University Master of Fine Arts (MFA) candidate in dance is one who understands and demonstrates what it is to be a working artists and scholar. Our MFA program is designed for returning professionals who wish to expand their development in their current area of specialization and/or to develop skills in another dance area.

The MFA is designed as a three-year program and requires a minimum of 90 hours of graduate level credit. It is the recognized terminal degree that focuses on one of five studio-centered areas: choreography, performance, directing from Labanotation scores, lighting, and dance and technology.

PhD

The PhD is a scholarly degree; its focus keeps dance at its core, with theory, history and literature grounded in and emanating from this rich nucleus of human activity. For the PhD candidate, critical, analytical and theoretical studies emerge from courses in history, composition and documentation and are grounded in the individual student's awareness of and experience in physical practice.

The PhD program requires a total of 135 graduate credit hours, at least 90 of which must be earned beyond the Masters degree. Twenty credits of core courses are required. The doctoral candidate may choose to focus on his or her own clearly defined research area.

International Student Requirements:

We strongly advise applicants living outside the USA to attend the Graduate Audition because this process enables the faculty to learn about you and for you to learn about us. If you are unable to attend the audition, you may substitute 1/2" VHS US standard NTSC format videotape or DVD which must include: • spoken introduction in English (3 minutes) • ballet barre, center stage, allegro enchainments (10 minutes) • modern dance sequences (10 minutes) • solo performance ( 5 minutes) Enclose with the tape a separate written description of the material.
