Program Description:
The School of Education and Leadership at Notre Dame de Namur University has earned a repution for excellence in teacher education. Many of the teachers, specialists and administrators currently working in the Bay Area are the product of a Notre Dame de Namur education. At the core of our credential program is personalized attention and individualized counseling, field orientation of programs, and successful placement of graduates. All credential programs were reaccredited in 2010.
The Department of Education offers a post-baccalaureate program that prepares students for the California Multiple Subject Credential. This credential, approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, authorizes service in self-contained classrooms, usually in an elementary school setting. Students will complete two student teaching experiences in addition to their professional coursework. One semester of student teaching is spent at the primary level and one semester in the intermediate grade level. NDNU students will be placed in two of the many public school districts with which the department has contracts, and will work in a culturally-diverse setting with students from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. School districts occasionally offer qualified Multiple Subject candidates the opportunity for a paid internship in lieu of student teaching. The Department of Education offers a post-baccalaureate program to prepare students for the California Single Subject Credential. This credential, which is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, authorizes candidates to teach in departmental subject areas, usually in a middle or high school setting. Students will complete two student teaching experiences along with their professional coursework. One semester of student teaching is spent at the junior high/middle school level and one semester in a high school setting within the academic area of the credential. NDNU students are placed in public school districts with which we have contracts, and work with culturally-diverse students from a variety of socioeconomic background. School districts occasionally offer qualified Single Subject candidates the opportunity for a paid internship, in lieu of student teaching. NDNU's Education Specialist Credential program prepares students to teach in special education settings in public and private schools. Mild/Moderate credential holders teach students in Resource Specialist Program classes (K-12) and students in special day classes for learning disabilities. Moderate/Severe credential holders will be able to teach students in grades K-12 whose needs are more severe. Students may pursue an Education Specialist credential whether or not they have a regular education credential. NDNU’s Special Education Program is designed to train teachers to alleviate the increasing shortage of special education teachers in the State of California. This shortage of special education teachers is so great that districts and county offices of education hire our students as teachers before they have completed their Education Specialist Credential program. These students/teachers teach on Intern Credentials until they complete their programs at NDNU. More than 95% of our students are working as paid teachers before they finish the credential program.
