Program Description:

The Master of Biotechnology Program (MBP) at Northwestern University stresses the interdisciplinary nature of biotechnology through the integration of course work and program-specific seminars with an in-depth biotechnology research experience. A wealth of other seminars and lectures available at Northwestern further enhances each student’s education in modern biotechnology. Northwestern University, as a private institution with considerable financial strength, maintains a superior environment for research and training in the life sciences, engineering, and biotechnology.

Successful research and training in biotechnology requires collaborations among scientists working in diverse areas. In this spirit, the MBP brings together students and faculty from a wide range of disciplines (chemistry, biology, medicine and engineering) that contribute to the biotechnology industry and to modern life-sciences and bioengineering research. Faculty research preceptors are drawn from several departments and programs within Northwestern University and the Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Research Institute. On-campus visits, lectures, and seminars by industrial scientists and engineers broaden student understanding of business, organizational, and ethical aspects of the biotechnology industry.

The MBP maintains close connections with the biotechnology industry through its advisory board, individual professionals, company representatives, and MBP alumni. These connections contribute to the Program in several areas, including short- and long-term strategic planning, student placement, and curriculum development. Industry support for the MBP has also included donations of funds and equipment to enhance student training.
