Program Description:

The Interdepartmental Biological Sciences (IBiS) Graduate Program of Northwestern University is an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program covering all areas of biological sciences with more than 70 participating laboratories from the following 5 departments: Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Physiology, Chemistry, Biomedical and Chemical Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering of Northwestern University. The research of our faculty include cell, molecular, developmental, circadian, cancer, and structural biology, genetics, biochemistry, biophysics, neuroscience, hormone action, signal transduction, bioengineering, biotechnology, and nanoscience. The program distinguishes itself by providing truly interdisciplinary training for its students, starting with rotations during the first 3 quarters of the academic year. The IBiS curriculum includes dedicated graduate courses that provide rigorous academic training, a large assortment of special topics courses and electives, teaching assistantships, and career development workshops and programs, to prepare our students for their careers after the Ph.D. Funding is guaranteed throughout the student's graduate career assuming acceptable performance. Additional funding opportunities exist in the form of fellowships, training grants and travel grants. IBiS offers a competitive stipend ($27,000 2009-10), tuition remission, and health and dental insurance coverage through the University.

International Student Requirements:

TOEFL exam demonstrating English proficiency. Applicants whose native language is not English must certify their proficiency in the English language by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). These scores are also required of applicants whose undergraduate training, in whole or in part, was taken at an institution in a country where English is not the native language. Earning an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited institution where the language of instruction is English exempts the applicant from having to take and submit TOEFL scores. Official scores must be less than two years old and must come directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The institutional code assigned to The Graduate School at Northwestern is 1565. Be sure to include this number on your test form. The minimum TOEFL score for consideration to the IBiS program is 600 on the written exam or 100 on the internet-based exam.
