Program Description:
NAU offers the following emphases for an M.A in English: Creative Writing; Secondary English Education; General English; Professional Writing; Rhetoric and the Teaching of Writing. The Creative Writing emphasis allows you to balance academic coursework in English with the serious study of creative writing. The Secondary English Education emphasis provides you with the necessary coursework to earn post-degree certification in English Education so that you may obtain a position as a secondary English/Language Arts teacher. The General English emphasis allows students to shape a program to suit their own goals. Our students include working professionals, K-12 teachers, community college adjunct faculty, students preparing for a Ph.D. program, and life-long learners. The MA in English - Professional Writing emphasis program helps students develop skills in high demand sorts of writing, such as grants and proposals, reports, procedures, policy statements, and many other types of workplace writing. Students completing this program will be able to enter the workforce as writers, editors, and or team members, working closely with engineers, scientists, healthcare professionals, and finance experts to create professional documents. The MA in English—Rhetoric and the Teaching of Writing emphasis is committed to providing outstanding graduate education focused on issues and problems that matter in rhetoric and the teaching of writing. The program focuses on providing quality instruction for students who are interested in language, literacy, and learning in contemporary society. The MA in English - Literature degree is designed to broaden and refine your knowledge of literary traditions in English. Our program's flexibility allows you to meet your own interests while at the same time experiencing the best of curricular innovation and longstanding, yet vigorous traditions.

GRE scores are not required for the MA-TESL program.
Non-native English speakers must also submit a current, official TOEFL score. A TOEFL score of 89 iBT (237 CBT, or 570 paper) or higher is required for regular admission. Applicants with lower scores can be conditionally admitted.
