Program Description:

This degree is designed to prepare professional counselors in community mental health settings as applied general practitioners with a unique educational-developmental orientation to work within social, mental health, and human resource agencies. The Counseling program prepares professional counselors, through classroom instruction, fieldwork experience, practica an internships, to provide counseling services that are grounded in areas that include: (a) human growth and development, (b) social and cultural foundations, (c) helping relationships, (d) group work, (e) career and lifestyle development, (f) appraisal, (g) research and program evaluation, and (h) professional orientation. Additionally, curricular experiences are provided in (a) foundations of community counseling, (b) contextual dimensions: community counseling, (c) knowledge and skills for the practice of community counseling, and (d) clinical instruction in community counseling. Two important focus areas of the Counseling program are (a) training professionals to have specialized expertise in rural and ethnocultural areas and (b) developing skills in structuring interagency partnerships to connect at-risk children, youth and families with comprehensive human services to support success in schools. The counseling program meets the coursework requirements for the professional counseling certification of the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiniers and for national counselor certification of the National Board for Certified Counselors. This degree is a 60 hour program accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

The College of Education is a key member of the Professional Education Unit at Northern Arizona University, which is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. The Counseling Program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. NAU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA).
