Program Description:

This programme is designed for both practising professionals and new graduates to develop and apply advanced skills and understanding to the planning, management and operation of transport systems. It aims to help you establish a responsible attitude towards the needs of society and the environment and to pay particular regard to transport safety considerations. You also acquire a range of town and country planning skills. You take compulsory modules (40 credits) in: transport policy in practice; management and operation of public transport systems; intelligent transport systems and e-services; research methods. For the MSc you also take optional modules (40 credits) from: spatial strategies; land economics; urban design and conservation; infrastructure, mobility and society; planning systems and institutions; the reflective practitioner; sustainable communities; urban design and conservation project; regenerating places. In addition you take a further 20 credits from: environmental impact and evaluation of transport activities; traffic management techniques; the economic and financial appraisal of transport activities; public enquiry into a transport scheme; project management; railway management, economics and planning; design of transport infrastructure; travel demand forecasting; road safety. For the Diploma you select your optional modules from those listed or from those offered by Newcastle University Business School. MSc students then complete a research project written up as a dissertation (80 credits) and Diploma students complete a 40-credit dissertation.
