Program Information

Degree Offered

MA

Format: Campus

Program Description:

This programme provides a grounding in professional practice and academic theory of translating between English, French, German and Spanish. The focus is on translating (ie written transfer) rather than on interpreting (ie spoken transfer). The balance between practical translator training, professional studies, and translation-theory input means that this MA provides both an entry-level qualification into the translation profession and a preparation for a research degree at a higher level. You take compulsory modules (90 credits) in: arts research methods; information technology for translators and interpreters; research methods in translating and interpreting; professional issues in translating and interpreting; translation practice and principles; translation workshop. You then choose two or three optional modules (30 credits) from the following: enterprise and entrepreneurship; translation studies; poetry and translation; liaison interpreting; literary translation; consecutive interpreting. A dissertation or translating project (60 credits) is also undertaken.
