Program Description:

This programme is suitable for students who have no prior knowledge of the history of the Americas as well as those who have previously studied the region. In addition to subject specific modules, you also receive research training which prepares you for the dissertation and provides the basic skills and knowledge required to continue with academic research in history at PhD level. This programme has been developed by the Americas Research Group at Newcastle University and covers the key historical themes in the development of Latin America, the Caribbean and North America. You take compulsory modules (80 credits), two optional modules (20 credits each) and write a dissertation (60 credits). Compulsory modules include: advanced themes in the history of the Americas; the practice of history; faculty research training; research methods in history; dissertation preparation training. Optional modules may include: slavery and freedom; the south and race û regional challenges and American nationalism; the æIndianÆ problem in Latin America; intellectual and political thought in Brazil and Hispano-America.
