Program Description:

This programme is designed to provide you with a good understanding and working knowledge of the challenges and opportunities faced by heritage managers looking after heritage resources and sites in urban and rural contexts. Graduates from this programme can pursue a career in the heritage sector or conduct further research. Each module is taught intensively during a one-week period to help ease access for part-time students and heritage professionals.

You take three compulsory modules (60 credits) which cover: issues and ideas; management; communication and interpretation. This is followed by two specialised modules (40 credits) which cover a variety of key issues related to the practice and processes of heritage management such as heritage planning and the development of management plans; the multi-purpose use of heritage sites; effective engagement with stakeholders and communities; the delicate relationship between management and tourism and how different management organisations interact with each other. You look at the variety of forms that heritage resources can take and the different values ascribed to them. The modules also cover the key philosophical principles and theoretical and conceptual approaches to heritage management and how these have influenced, and have been influenced by, the development of international conventions, national legislation and policy formulation.

You then undertake a tailored eight-week placement at a heritage organisation (20 credits) and finally a piece of individual research for presentation as a 15–18,000-word dissertation (60 credits). If you do not complete a dissertation you may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma.

International Student Requirements:

Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in writing, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based), or equivalent.
