Program Description:
NYU Steinhardt offers M.M. programs in Instrumental, Jazz Instrumental, Piano, and Vocal Performance, and Music Theory and Composition, and is one of the few institutions in the United States to offer the Ph.D. degree program in Music Performance and Composition. Faculty members are internationally acclaimed artists, composers, scholars, and members of such renowned music organizations as the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera. They include Joe Lovano, Robin Eubanks, Brian Lynch, Chris Potter, John Scofield, Richard Bona, Antonio Sanchez, Gil Goldstein, and Kenny Werner (jazz); Martin Canin, Eduardus Halim, Miyoko Lotto, and Seymour Bernstein (piano); Stanley Drucker and Esther Lamneck (clarinet); and Stephanie Chase, Anton Miller, and Martin Beaver (violin). Currently in residence: Combo Nuvo, the New Hudson Saxophone Quartet, the NYU Music Theatre Repertory Ensemble, the NYU New Music Ensemble, and the Quintet of the Americas. Composers in residence have included George Perle, Milton Babbitt, Ned Rorem, Roger Reynolds, Lukas Foss, Emil Sein, Morton Subotnik, and George Crumb. Most students enter the graduate programs of study in music performance and composition with the intention of pursuing a career in performance and/or composition coupled with teaching at the college or university level. Opportunities for graduates focusing on composition include, but are not limited to, careers in academia, studio instruction, professional composition, television and film scoring, and applied music. A summer graduate abroad program—Music, Dance, and Technology—is offered in Florence, Italy. Auditions and/or composition portfolios are required for prospective students.
