Program Information

Degree Offered

M.A.-Media, Culture and Communication, Ph.D.-Media Ecology: Studies in Communication

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The M.A. program in Media, Culture, and Communication prepares students to understand and analyze culture and communication environments and to become acquainted with key debates and scholarship in communications, media studies, and related fields. Faculty offer an interdisciplinary approach to the study of human and mediated communication-and recognize the two are often fused in this technological age. Students earn 36 total credits beginning with foundation courses in theory and research methods. They specialize in one of five areas of study: Persuasion and Politics; Interaction and Social Processes; Cultural and Visual Studies; Technology and Society; or Global and Transcultural Communication. Graduate students undertake rigorous course work and are strongly encouraged to participate in academic conferences, study abroad, and practical fieldwork such as internships. The department has a robust list of internship partners and an internship manager dedicated to building relationships with professional organizations in New York City and beyond. In addition, study abroad programs in Asia and Europe expose students to global media, cultural insights, and comparative contexts. Graduates go on to work in public policy, research, education, marketing, and positions throughout traditional and new media professions. Many further their education through doctoral study, law school, or business school post graduation. Our selective Ph.D. program in Media, Culture, and Communication allows students to investigate, elaborate, and critique human symbolic practices and ways of deriving meaning. Research areas available for doctoral students are shaped by the scholarly expertise and current research of the faculty.
