Program Description:
Combine your love of language with inquiry-based teaching methods for children, adolescents, and adults. Our graduate programs in Foreign Language Education prepare you to teach Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, or Spanish and to meet the demand for second language teachers. Our programs cultivate an appreciation for cultural diversity and are based on the belief that fluency in two or more languages is better than fluency in one. All curricula integrate second language pedagogy, linguistics, cross-cultural studies, advanced language study, and second language acquisition with practical field experiences and student teaching. Our M.A. program in Foreign Language Education leads to New York State initial teacher certification for grades 7-12. It can be combined with our M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) into a dual certification program that expands your employment options by preparing you to teach both your target foreign language and English. Our M.A. in Teaching French as a Foreign Language with TESOL is a unique two-city dual certification curriculum with one year in Paris and one year in New York City, offered jointly with the NYU Department of French. Our Post-M.A. Advanced Certificate program provides opportunities for second language teachers, supervisors, teacher trainers, administrators, and materials developers to continue their study beyond the Master's level. Unique graduate study abroad opportunities broaden your learning experiences. Graduates are in demand as teachers, program coordinators, curriculum specialists, and evaluators in elementary and secondary schools, community colleges, and universities throughout the New York area, across the country, and worldwide. Opportunities are rapidly growing in many nonschool settings as well, such as community associations, immigrant resettlement agencies, publishing, training programs for multinational corporations, and international agencies both here and abroad.
