Program Information

Degree Offered

M.A. – English Education M.A. and Advanced Certificate: Teachers of English Language and Literature in Colleges , Ph.D. – English Education

Program Description:

We offer an M.A. in English Education that leads to New York State initial teacher certification for grades 7-12. Develop mastery in literature, reading, writing, and inquiry-based teaching methods for diverse adolescent learners in urban settings. Focus on multimedia and digital literacies and traditional theories of writing, reading, and language development; teaching methods that get teens from all cultures excited about using language in new ways; and an understanding of the urban school community and the social, cultural, and political aspects of language learning and diversity. Study in historic Greenwich Village, one of New York’s most creative, artistic, and intellectual neighborhoods – near where Robert Louis Stevenson met Mark Twain for the first time, where Eugene O’Neill and Edna St. Vincent Millay planned their theater productions, and where Allen Ginsberg was once almost arrested for reciting poetry without a license. The pivotal experience of the certification M.A. program is a two-semester sequence of student teaching at the middle and high school levels in our host New York City public schools. Unique graduate study abroad opportunities broaden your learning experiences. Our faculty includes world-class experts in the teaching of reading/writing, in understanding the connections between education and culture, in teaching with new media, and in advancing school reform. Join hundreds of our graduates who teach in public and independent, charter, and magnet school classrooms throughout New York City and across the country. Or work in educational print and electronic publishing, educational television, museum education, and as language and literature specialists and trainers in private and non-profit settings throughout the U.S. Both a professional certification M.A. and an M.A. for experienced teachers are offered; students in our selective Ph.D. program prepare for careers as researchers and teacher educators in literacy and the English language arts.
