Program Description:
The M.A. programs in Early Childhood Education (Birth to Grade 2) and Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) lead to New York State initial teacher certification. The Early Childhood program involves deep study of how children learn at different developmental stages and in different contexts; fosters an understanding of the relationships between schools, families, and community-based organizations to impact student learning; and supports the growth of teachers as social advocates for educational equity in a pluralistic culture. Both the Early Childhood and Childhood programs emphasize working with high-need communities and at risk populations, including those entering special education and English language learners. The Early Childhood program prepares you to work with infants, toddlers, and young children in a variety of educational settings, including pre-K programs and elementary schools, particularly those in urban environments. Childhood Education graduates work in elementary school classrooms, after school programs, and various educational organizations all over the country. Both programs include closely mentored and supervised student teaching experiences in dynamic and diverse classroom settings throughout New York City, and the opportunity to work with faculty with years of experience as researchers, educators, clinicians, and advisors to governmental agencies. Unique graduate study abroad opportunities broaden your learning experiences. You can begin your degree program in a traditional Fall-start format, or accelerate your studies with our 1-year, summer-start Fast Track option. Dual certification M.A. programs in Early Childhood or Childhood Education with Special Education are also offered, along with professional certification programs for experienced teachers. Students in our highly-selective Ph.D. program prepare to become educators and researchers who are dedicated to improving children’s access to equitable opportunities for learning.
