Program Description:

Music therapy is defined broadly as the use of music in the treatment of people of all ages who have problems of a mental, physical, and/or emotional nature. Because of the large variety of problems patients experience and the breadth of possible uses of music, the profession of music therapy is beginning to encourage specialization at the graduate level in both music therapy practice and training. NYU Steinhardt's M.A. program in Music Therapy attracts students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds to study and apprentice with leading professionals in music psychotherapy. The program is clinically oriented and the New York metropolitan area offers rich opportunities for clinical observation and internships in facilities such as medical and psychiatric hospitals, prisons, schools and centers for special-needs children, rehabilitation centers, and treatment centers for the homeless, elderly, and terminally ill, among others. In addition to the M.A. program we offer post-master's specialization training in Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy and in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM). Students may combine some course work in Nordoff-Robbins and GIM as part of their degree requirements. The Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy, located on campus, offers clinical opportunities for student fieldwork and internship experiences with children with disabilities. The music therapy program is approved by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) and leads to professional music therapy certification (MT-BC). Graduates are also eligible for licensure as creative arts therapists in New York State.
