Program Information

Degree Offered

M.M.-Music Technology

Format: Campus

Program Description:

NYU Steinhardt's M.M. program in Music Technology prepares students for careers in recording engineering, audiovisual production and postproduction, scoring for film and multimedia, audio mastering, audio maintenance and repair, synthesizer programming, software development, and multimedia. Students are allowed to develop expertise within an academic setting where learning by creative experimentation is encouraged. Three different tracks are offered: (1) Scoring for Film and Multimedia allows students to gain knowledge and experience in all matters pertaining to music composition for film, television, and other media; (2) the Tonmeister sequence instructs students in the area of concert recording techniques, and also provides opportunities to record rehearsals and recitals and to learn microphone technique and acoustics; and (3) Music Technology allows students to customize the curriculum to fit their own particular interests. The program in Music Technology maintains 12 recording and computer music studios. Music technology students also have access to advanced hardware platforms for computer music, graphics, animation, and multimedia. Collaborative projects can be realized by students from Music Technology and other NYU programs that combine the arts and technology, such as the Tisch School's Kanbar Institute of Film and Television and Interactive Telecommunications Program. A summer graduate abroad program-Music, Dance, and Technology-is offered in Florence, Italy. The Ph.D. program prepares students for careers in university teaching, industry research and development, as well as in multimedia, audio computation, and other research fields at the constantly changing intersection of music and technology. Students benefit from the course offerings, faculty, facilities, and resources of NYU Steinhardt and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.
