Program Information

Degree Offered

M.A. - Art Therapy

Program Description:

This 49-point master's program prepares graduates to work as art therapists in a variety of settings including hospitals, community agencies, shelters, early childhood centers, prisons, nursing homes, schools, and hospices. The program strives to create a balance between an understanding of the healthy potential of the creative process itself and the informed use of psychological principles in the therapeutic situation. This means that the student learns to modify and adapt two disciplines-the visual arts and psychotherapy-in order to affect the synthesis of art therapy. Students undertake extensive internships in New York City, art capital of the world and center of one of the most diverse and richly complex health care systems in the country. Graduates are prepared to diagnose, plan, and treat individuals and groups including young children, adults, the homeless, survivors of trauma, HIV/AIDS patients, adolescents, the elderly, substance abusers, and people with physical and emotional disabilities. Graduates of the program are eligible for New York State Licensure as creative arts therapists. Completion of New York State Licensure requirements allows one to engage in private psychotherapy practice.
