Program Information
Degree Offered
Master of Science in Fundraising and Grantmaking
Format: Campus
Program Description:
The nonprofit sector’s need for highly trained, creative, and thoughtful professionals in fundraising and grantmaking has never been greater. A contracting economy has tightened donors’ belts, and organizations must find creative new ways to fund their missions. As a result, the field is expanding. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, grantmaking jobs are projected to increase during the decade ranging from 2008 to 2018.
In response, the George H. Heyman, Jr. Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising at NYU-SCPS has expanded its master’s degree program to offer advanced opportunities for professional growth and training in fundraising and grantmaking. Professionals already established in the industry enroll in the M.S. in Fundraising and Grantmaking to improve their credentials and to acquire specific training in their field. Recent college graduates and career changers also find the program relevant, as it provides an overview of the basic fundamentals of fundraising and grantmaking, as well as concentration courses that allow them to immerse themselves in an area of specialization.
Through in-depth analyses of the legal, financial, ethical, psychological, and historical aspects of philanthropy, students learn to implement successful outreach practices—including direct mail, telecommunications, social media, and special events—and to gain a comprehensive understanding of giving and grant evaluation within nonprofit organizations. In addition, they explore the impact of globalization on philanthropy, the development of boards, and the economic and statistical underpinnings of fundraising reporting.
