Program Description:

NYU Steinhardt offers three M.A. programs that prepare students to work in the field of education policy: Education and Social Policy; Educational Leadership, Politics, and Advocacy; and Sociology of Education. Each differs in the skills it teaches and each prepares students for different careers in education policy. The three programs share many common elements: a focus on urban education, a concern for social justice and equity in education, coursework and applied learning that connects theory and practice, a strong sense of community among faculty and students, strong links to community and research organizations that support schools, opportunities for students to engage with faculty and researchers in projects related to policy analysis and evaluation through Steinhardt's numerous centers and institutes, and New York City as an important laboratory in which to learn and practice education policy. The program in Education and Social Policy teaches students to use statistics and quantitative methods, large datasets, and research designs to analyze education policies for grades kindergarten-12 and higher education. The M.A. in Educational Leadership, Politics, and Advocacy program prepares students who want to work towards social and education equity through leadership, politics, policy, and advocacy positions in and around schools. The Sociology of Education program provides a disciplinary grounding that allows students to approach education policy questions with a sociological lens. NYU Steinhardt also offers a 36-credit M.A. in Educational Leadership: School Building Leader program, which prepares students for visionary roles in urban schools as principals or teacher leaders, coaches, and mentors. The program leads to New York State certification as a school building leader (assistant principal or principal). Study abroad programs in the U.K., South Africa, Ghana, Brazil, and India provide opportunities to study educational leadership, policy, and reform in international settings.
