Program Description:
Our counseling programs are committed to generating, advancing, and disseminating knowledge related to research and practice in counseling psychology. The principles informing our work include understanding people across the lifespan in cultural contexts, promoting equity and social justice, and helping people craft lives of wellness, health, and meaning. Students interested in counseling and guidance may choose from two programs: (1) Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness, which prepares mental health counselors who work with both individuals and groups in a broad spectrum of settings-community agencies, university counseling, mental health centers, hospitals, HIV/AIDS outreach programs, and substance abuse treatment centers. Graduates are eligible for NY State Licensure in Mental Health Counseling and can take the National Counselor Exam to become a national certified counselor and (2) Counseling and Guidance, which has two tracks: School Counseling or Bilingual School Counseling, The Counseling and Guidance program prepares school counselors in grades K-12. Graduates are eligible for NY State Certification as school counselors and are eligible to take the National Certified School Counselor Exam to become national certified school counselors. The Advanced Certificate is available to individuals with a master's degree in counseling and provides study in individually selected areas of counseling. The highly competitive doctoral program in counseling psychology prepares fully qualified psychologists with specialized preparation in counseling who are eligible for licensure by NY State. The curriculum emphasizes a developmental understanding of clients, a commitment to a health and wellness model of intervention, and an appreciation of the gendered, cultural, class, and institutional context of people's lives as these affect both clients and counselors.
