Program Description:
The Department of Economics focuses on the theoretical and empirical analysis of capitalism. Its strategy is to examine capitalist systems from global, institutional, and historical perspectives, emphasizing questions of economic policy. Thus, in addition to required courses in economic analysis and econometrics, our students study the emergence of capitalism, the structure and dynamics of advanced capitalism, the Third World in the global economy, and the history of economic thought. Although students are expected to master the main body of orthodox micro- and macroeconomic doctrine, the department attempts to broaden the scope of economic theory by utilizing such alternative tools of analysis as the theory of competition, capital theory, labor, gender and race, macrodynamics, and public policy.
