Program Information
Degree Offered
M.S. - Medical Informatics
Format: Campus
Program Description:
Medical informatics focuses on the structures and algorithms necessary to manipulate the information used for decision making. This focus separates informatics from other medical disciplines where information content is the main objective. Medical informatics professionals design, implement and manage information systems used by health care organizations. These information systems are used by managers and practitioners to deliver more efficient and effective patient care. Medical informatics careers are available in hospitals, health maintenance organizations, insurance and software companies, consulting organizations, government agencies and research institutions. Large health care organizations hire clinical consultants to bridge the gap between clinicians and traditional information systems personnel. Ideally, these individuals are clinicians with an advanced degree in medical informatics. There is a rapidly growing need for skilled professionals who understand both information technology and the health care environment. MSOE's program is jointly offered with Medical College of Wisconsin.
