MA in Dance; MFA in Dance with an Emphasis in Choreography; MFA in Dance with an Emphasis in Choreography and Performance

Format: Campus

Program Description:

Mills College offers an intimate environment for dancers, choreographers, and dance scholars to pursue graduate study in modern dance. Students have the opportunity to work with internationally known guest artists from New York to San Francisco, perform and choreograph works from proscenium stage to studio, and participate in the Mills Repertory Dance Company, performing work by Trisha Brown, Molissa Fenley, Margaret Jenkins, Mark Morris, and Paul Taylor. We offer three graduate degrees in dance, including:

The master of arts in dance is an academic degree focused on research-based activities related to dance aesthetics, theory, history, cultural studies, or educational perspectives. Designed for dance scholars, this master's degree is often a step toward completion of a PhD, particularly suitable for those interested in teaching.

The master of fine arts in dance with an emphasis in choreography is focused on the creation of dance and is designed for students with an intermediate level of modern dance technique. Our select group of students form a small, close-knit community. Working one-on-one with accomplished faculty dancer/choreographers, MFA candidates deepen their work as artists and expand their theoretical and historical knowledge in the field.

The master of fine arts in dance with an emphasis in choreography and performance is designed for students with an advanced level of modern dance technique. Our MFA program enables students to deepen their work, studying one-on-one with accomplished faculty dancer/choreographers in an environment rich with performance opportunities.
