Program Description:

The Department of Kinesiology and the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports (ISYS) at Michigan State University now offers two different approaches to online graduate-level study in coaching education. Go to our website to learn more.

Our original certificate program consists of three 3-semester hour courses that address legal, administrative, psychological, sociological, and physical issues as they relate to the coaching of amateur athletes. After successful completion of all three courses, a Certificate of Completion will be awarded. These courses may be transferable to other graduate degree programs.
In the second option, the sports leadership and coaching courses can be used as a minor for the online Masters of Arts in Education offered by the College of Education. This is an excellent opportunity for the teacher-coach looking to obtain a masters degree and also working on their coach training. We offer 4 courses, 3 of which can be assembled as a Concentration Area.
Our instructors are leaders in the field of sport science and coaching education. Courses available are:
Kin 854: Sport Law for Coaches and Administrators (Taught by Rick Atkinson, Assistant Director of Athletics at MSU)
Kin 855: Psychosocial Bases of Coaching (Taught by Dr. Marty Ewing of MSU)
Kin 856: Physical Bases of Coaching (Taught by Dr. Scott Riewald, United States Olympic Committee Senior Sport Technologist)
Kin 857: Promoting Positive Youth Development (Taught by Dr. Dan Gould of MSU)

Eligibility Requirements:

Students wishing to enroll as Lifelong Education undergraduates (graduate certificate) must have a high school diploma, or its equivalent. This information is collected as part of the application procedure. The high school transcript is not required as proof. The only exception to this requirement is for High School High Achievers.
