Program Description:

The Michigan School of Professional Psychology (MiSPP), located in southeast Michigan, is a dynamic, independent higher education institution providing master of arts and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology. With a history in humanistic psychology, MiSPP is dedicated to providing a unique and academically superior graduate education. Experiential, self-directed learning is emphasized with a faculty committed to providing clinically relevant instruction. Graduate students find a self- directed, student-centered environment, where creative learning processes are supported. Students are drawn to the commitment to human science research, mentored by faculty with expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research methodology. The Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology (MA) is an intensive program designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to become limited licensed psychologists and psychotherapists. The curriculum challenges students to integrate core knowledge of psychology with emerging clinical skills and attitudes. The program bridges traditional and applied programs by emphasizing psychological theories and concepts, personal experience, clinical training, and research. The instructional format is interactional in nature and combines a variety of teaching methods. Graduates of this accredited MA program are eligible to apply for the Temporary Limited License in Psychology (TLLP) in the State of Michigan. After successfully completing 2,000 postgraduate hours of supervised clinical experience in an organized health care setting, graduates may apply for the Permanent Limited License (LLP) at the Master’s level. MA students enroll in a one year full-time or a two to three year part-time program in a specified sequence of coursework, a clinical scholarship project and practicum. Forty-seven semester credit hours are required to complete the degree. From the time of enrollment, students complete the degree as a cohort, building personal and professional relationships that enhance the learning experience. The Doctor of Clinical Psychology (PsyD) program educates and trains students to become competent professional psychologists. Utilizing the practitioner-scholar model, the program provides students with a broad foundation in clinical training and research methods. Critical thinking and an integration of humanistic approaches with current theories of practice are emphasized. The program provides an educational environment that values cooperative and collaborative learning and promotes professional development and personal growth. Graduates provide psychological service to diverse individuals and communities. This regionally accredited post-masters program offers continued graduate training in the field of clinical psychology. The instructional format is interactional in nature and combines a variety of teaching methods. An understanding of quantitative and qualitative research is developed with special emphasis on foundations and designs of qualitative research. After successfully completing the coursework of the first two years of the PsyD Program, students are awarded the Specialist (PsyS) degree and may become eligible to apply for licensure as a Temporary Limited License Psychologist (TLLP) in the State of Michigan. Graduates of the PsyD program may apply for the (permanent) Limited License Psychologist (LLP). After completing 2,000 postgraduate hours of supervised clinical experience and passing the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP), PsyD graduates are eligible to become a (fully) Licensed Psychologist (LP) in the State of Michigan. The PsyD curriculum encompasses coursework, clinical training and dissertation research. PsyD students enroll as a cohort, with a minimum three year residency requirement during the first three years of the program. Courses are scheduled sequentially according to academic year in the program. MiSPP strives to create a culturally diverse academic community made up of individuals with strong interpersonal skills, who are goal oriented. Individuals with proven academic success, a desire for professional and personal growth, and who intend to become a practicing clinician are encouraged to apply. Applications are accepted year round; program admission is for fall semester only.
