Program Description:

The Master of Music (M.M.) in Performance degree at McNally Smith College of Music is designed for students who want an intensive study of music performance that encompasses a wide variety of contemporary musical styles. The unique curriculum allows students to expand their understanding of music performance possibilities by studying music based upon the Western traditions, non-Western cultures, American popular music styles, and the diverse cultures that have influenced the music that is being performed around the world today. Various approaches to music are presented in educational formats that are practical and relevant to this ever-changing art form.

The M.M. program is available in the following areas: Voice, strings, woodwinds, brass, piano, guitar, bass, keyboard, and percussion. The program emphasizes advanced music performance study through applied music lessons, ensembles, recitals, and studio performance opportunities. A core curriculum, emphasizing music theory, business, and research, serve the important role of developing an understanding of music and a life in the arts beyond the student’s chosen major.

The M.M. in Performance program also provides students with cutting edge technology and a contemporary artistic approach to the study of music performance through their access to our state-of-the-art studio complex. Graduates receiving McNally Smith College of Music’s M.M. in Performance degree are prepared to pursue a professional career in music or possible further study at the doctoral level.
