Degree Offered
Master of Arts in Liberal Studies
Format: Campus
Program Description:
Manhattanville' s Master of Arts in Liberal Studies is perfect for adult students who want to further their education in the liberal arts. The curriculum is as flexible as the schedule, allowing students to self-design an interdisciplinary program that suits their personal or professional interests. Courses are offered in the evenings. Classes are small, and an academic advisor will assist each student plan a program that is dynamic and meaningful.
The 30-credit program consists of nine courses and a final master's essay. The curriculum includes a core seminar in the humanities, followed by eight electives, which may include an independent study and, when appropriate, an internship. Most students complete the program in approximately two years.
Manhattanville' s long tradition of excellence in the liberal arts assures high quality and variety of liberal arts courses, many of which are offered at the graduate level. Areas of study include Art History, Romance Languages, Literature, World Religions, and more.
The MALS program is functionally related to the areas of Childhood Education, Early Childhood Education, English Language Arts, and Social Studies Education. A student with a Valid New York State classroom teaching initial license in one of those areas may apply for a Professional license in that area. Students interested in this possibility should consult the New York State Education Department web page (http://usny.nysed.gov/teachers/teachercert.html) for current information on certification requirements.
The program has a rolling admissions process and applications may be submitted throughout the year. New students may join the program in September (for fall semester) and in January (for spring semester).
