Program Description:

The master's degree in Reading and Literacy leads to a Standard Specialist Certificate in Reading (K-12). Course work includes methods of teaching reading, content area reading, evaluation/diagnosis/remediation, comprehensive instruction, literature for students K-12, and clinical and laboratory practicum experiences.

Accreditation:

All teacher education programs are approved for entitlement by the Illinois State Board of Education in conjunction with the Illinois State Teacher Certification Board. In addition, the College of Education has earned NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) accreditation.

Eligibility Requirements:

To qualify for full admission to the Reading and Literacy program, you must take the following steps:

•Submit a completed graduate application form with non-refundable application fee, two letters of recommendation, and official college transcripts from all institutions previously attended.
•Meet with the appropriate Department Chair or Program Director for a personal interview to discuss your educational goals.
•Receive a passing grade on the Illinois Certification Basic Skills Test.
•If you're an international student and English is not your first language, certify your proficiency in reading and writing English. Your score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) should be in the 65th percentile for your nationality group, or higher.
•Complete a satisfactory Graduate Writing Requirement during your first semester of graduate study.
