Program Description:

The design of this program also requires that an individual have at least three hours of previous graduate or undergraduate coursework in reading.

Total degree hours for Master of Education Curriculum and Instruction in Literacy and English Language Learning: 33 semester hours and Comprehensive Exam

State Assessment Requirements:
At the conclusion of the program, candidates seeking Reading Teacher Endorsement and ESL Endorsement must pass the Illinois Certification Test for the Reading Teacher and the Illinois Certification Test for English as a Second Language.

Clinical Hours Requirements:
The State of Illinois requires 65 clinical hours for the Reading Teacher Endorsement. These are distributed in course assignments across the program. In addition, ESL Endorsement requires 100 clinical/field hours or three months teaching with ESL/ELL students.

Accreditation:

All teacher education programs are approved for entitlement by the Illinois State Board of Education in conjunction with the Illinois State Teacher Certification Board. In addition, the College of Education has earned NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) accreditation.

Eligibility Requirements:

1.Hold a baccalaureate degree
2.Maintain an undergraduate grade point average of at least 2.75 (on a 4.00 scale) in the last 60 undergraduate hours
or Request provisional admission from the Department Faculty.
3.Complete a graduate application form. The application fee is waived for alumni of Lewis University.
4.Submit two letters of recommendation from professors, employers or advisors. Letters of recommendation are to be submitted on the proper departmental approved form.
5.Submit complete official transcripts from all institutions previously attended.
6.Meet with the appropriate Department Chair/Program Director for a personal interview to discuss the student’s goals and to set-up a planned sequence of courses.
7.Complete a satisfactory Graduate Writing Requirement administered by the College of Education within the first semester of graduate study at Lewis.
8.Submit evidence of a passing grade on the Illinois Certification Basic Skills Test.
