Program Description:
Each year, Illinois public and private schools enroll more students whose first language is not English. As an ESL teacher, you will have the opportunity to help these students bridge the language gap, become proficient in English and achieve academic success.
Lewis University's College of Education offers a special post-baccalaureate program, training educators to teach English Language Learners of all grades.
As a student, your required courses will include:
•Foundations of Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations
•Linguistics for the Teacher of English Language Learners
•Cross-Cultural Studies for Teaching English Language Learners
With the completion of 12 additional credit hours, you can obtain your Master of Education.
Accreditation:
All teacher education programs are approved for entitlement by the Illinois State Board of Education in conjunction with the Illinois State Teacher Certification Board. In addition, the College of Education has earned NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) accreditation.
Eligibility Requirements:
•Initial or standard Type 03, 04, 09, 10 or 73 Illinois certificate.
•Two years successful teaching or school service personnel experience.
•Fulfillment of House Bill 150 (Survey of Exceptional Children and Adolescents or Exceptional Learners in Inclusive Communities).
•Successful completion of Illinois Certification Basic Skills Test.
•Successful completion of Lewis' COE Graduate Writing Examination
•A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. (To qualify for full admission, you should have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 for the final 60 hours.)
