Program Description:

For educators who already hold a master's degree, Lewis University's College of Education offers a Certificate of Advanced Study in Education.

The Certificate of Advanced Study provides advanced coursework in two separate programs of study:

•The General Administrative sequence provides the knowledge and training you will need to become a school principal. It leads to the Type 75 Principal's Certificate.
•The Superintendent Endorsement is an accelerated course sequence providing the skills required by central office leaders. It leads to the Superintendent Endorsement on the Type 75 Certificate.
Both programs offer a comprehensive theoretical and practical foundation for educational leadership.

You will take courses such as:

•School Law for Administrators
•Educational Organization and Administration
•The Principalship
•Administrative Practicum.
You will explore topics like the legal history and standing of schools in the U.S., the administrative structure of Illinois public schools, equity in school financing, and school reform.

You will also complete 240 hours of clinical work. During the Administrative Practicum, you will be assigned to a position in a school, where you will work with your mentor on various leadership projects.

Accreditation:

All teacher education programs are approved for entitlement by the Illinois State Board of Education in conjunction with the Illinois State Teacher Certification Board. In addition, the College of Education has earned NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) accreditation.

Eligibility Requirements:

•Valid initial or standard Type 03, 04, 09, 10 or 73 Illinois certificate.
•Two years successful teaching or school service personnel experience.
•Survey of the Exceptional Child Requirement (105IL CS 5/21-2a).
•A master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. (To qualify for full admission, you should have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.)
