Program Description:

The Self Designed Master's Degree (SDMD) is a two-year, 36-credit, individualized program of graduate study. The program has two models available, the team-based model and the course-based Model. In the team-based model students work closely with a core faculty advisor, and two experts/professionals from their field. In the course-based model students work closely with a core faculty advisor, to either design independent study courses or to determine which courses at Lesley University will support their area of specialization. The flexible program structure allows students to work independently during each semester, from home or abroad.

All Self Designed Master's students work closely with a faculty advisor who serves in an advising, mentoring, and teaching role. Students are connected to Lesley's robust academic community and have access to a wealth of resources. Former students of the program have gone on to pursue doctoral programs, publish work, and establish themselves as leaders in their specialized fields, which include: Alternative Education, including Montessori and Reggio Emilia Inspired; Environmental Studies; Integrative Holistic Health; Mindfulness Studies; Multicultural Education; Music Pedagogy; Non-Profit Management; Women and Gender Studies; Yoga Psychology.

Self Designed Master’s Degree students complete a Thesis that serves as a culmination of the program and demonstrates the student's mastery of the chosen specialization or discipline. Students will participate in three online colloquia during the course of the program, during which students work on research and writing skills, enhance their critical thinking skills, and present papers and final projects.
