Program Description:

Research can be conducted in various fields within Chemistry and Biochemistry. Areas of expertise within the department include:Analytical, Environmental and Inorganic (coordination chemistry, analytical chemistry related to mining and smelting, geochemical behaviour of toxic trace elements, electro-deposition of metals and alloys) Biochemistry (biotechnology, biochemical adaptation, biosensors, microbial oxidation and interactions with metals, biochemistry of stressed organisms, enzymes and diseases, molecular control of apoptosis). Organic and Physical Organic (new synthetic methodologies relevant to medicinal chemistry, natural products, metal-atom-mediated transformations, mechanisms of organic reactions, kinetic isotope effects)Physical and Theoretical (thermodynamics of phase equilibria, quantum theory of chemical reactions, computer-assisted drug design, macromolecular dynamics, self-organization in complex systems, chemical oscillations).
