Program Information

Degree Offered

Master of Science in Public Health in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene

Format: Campus, Online

Program Description:

The MSPH in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene (OEH) program is designed for students interested in developing or advancing careers in occupational and environmental risk assessment and management. Training includes traditional industrial hygiene and environmental health practice, air pollution, exposure assessment, environmental monitoring, and risk assessment. Coursework provides training in preparation for the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) exam.

We offer two options for earning the MSPH in OEH. We have a traditional face-to-face residential program which requires one-and-a-half years to complete and includes a three-month internship. We also offer a part-time/internet-based (PTIB) option which enables working professionals who live at a distance from Baltimore to participate in this training opportunity. The PTIB option can be completed in two-and-a-half to four years, depending on the student's previous experience and individual circumstances. All required coursework can be completed through a combination of online and compressed-format institute courses (on campus). Both options for earning the MSPH in OEH confer the same degree and students must meet the same academic requirements.

Program graduates are typically employed in industry, unions, consulting, government, military or academia. Some of their job titles include: industrial hygienist, environmental risk assessor, occupational health specialist, environmental/occupational health manager, environmental policy specialist, safety manager, and emergency preparedness coordinator. They are usually immediately engaged in a wide range of activities requiring a broad set of problem-solving skills which increasingly have environmental as well as occupational implications. A high proportion of graduates move into senior management and policy-making positions within ten years of graduation.

Accreditation:

The full time program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET); the internet-based option is currently under review for ABET accreditation.
