Program Description:

The graduate program trains professionally motivated students for careers as research scholars and college anduniversity teachers. Hence it is designed for candidates who want to proceed directly to the Ph.D. degree. TheDepartment is especially strong in the history of the United States, Europe from medieval times through the 19thcentury, Latin America and Africa. Fields are also offered in modern Russian and East Asian history. Although theDepartment does not neglect political history, it is heavily oriented toward social, economic, intellectual and culturalhistory.
