Program Description:
What is IslandWood? A place that inspires learning and caring.
IslandWood is a nationally-recognized outdoor education center located on Bainbridge Island, Washington, across Puget Sound from Seattle. IslandWood's mission is to provide exceptional learning experiences and to inspire lifelong environmental and community stewardship. Our residential School Overnight Program serves 4,000 elementary school students from diverse races, cultures and backgrounds, each year. Students discover connections between themselves and nature, and are inspired to become stewards of their home communities.
What is the IslandWood Graduate Program? A community for teaching and learning.
The IslandWood Graduate Program is a 10-month intensive experience in Education, Environment, and Community (EEC) in which participants earn credits toward a master’s degree in education. The EEC program is offered in partnership with the University of Washington and combines rigorous academic coursework with teaching experiences at IslandWood and in diverse partner schools. Through a new bridge agreement with Antioch University Seattle, candidates can now receive their Master of Arts in Teaching with teacher certification.
Who are the EEC graduate students? People who seek to change the world.
Program participants come from a wide range of backgrounds and undergraduate majors, and share a passion for excellence in education. Each year, they develop a supportive learning community that sustains itself beyond their ten months together at IslandWood. Upon completion of the EEC program, ninety-eight percent of our students continue their graduate education and complete a master’s degree. Most EEC alumni currently hold positions as educators or nonprofit administrators. They are connecting people, places, and education itself.
Accreditation:
The IslandWood Education, Environment and Community program is accredited as the first half of a master’s degree in education through the University of Washington. Some course credits are accredited through Seattle Pacific University. We also offer a bridge to a Master of Arts in Teaching with certification, through Antioch University, Seattle.
