Program Description:

The Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts was founded for the sole purpose of providing doctoral studies in art theory and philosophy to visual artists. IDSVA admits candidates who hold an MFA or a similar degree, such as an M.Arch. or an MA in curatorial studies, visual studies, or art history.
In addition to online instruction, study includes intensive residencies at Spannocchia Castle in Tuscany; at the Venice Biennale; in Paris; and in New York City.
IDSVA's pioneering curriculum - fusing distance learning with intensive residencies - allows working art professionals to pursue rigorous advanced scholarship without having to interrupt or abandon their teaching career, studio practice, or other professional responsibilities. Beyond the three-year curriculum, up to three additional years are allowed for completion of the dissertation.

Founded in 2007, IDSVA is currently undergoing the accreditation process as a new school with our regional accrediting body.
