Program Description:

The Hollins' summer master's program in screenwriting and film studies is designed to attract those interested in screenwriting as well as those interested in the academic study of film. The program offers courses of study in the writing of screenplays and the study of the history, aesthetics, and theory of the art of film. During a yearly six-week term, the program runs from mid-June through the end of July. The degree can typically be competed in three to five summers.

The program's instructors are visiting screenwriters and distinguished scholars from other institutions, as well as professors from the ranks of Hollins' permanent faculty.

Students pursuing the MA in screenwriting and film studies are required to complete eight, four-credit courses (including FILM 510: Film Analysis & Research) plus an eight-credit thesis. The thesis for the MA must be an extended critical or research essay of an academic nature. Students must demonstrate proficiency in reading a modern foreign language (French, German, or Spanish) and pass a comprehensive final examination.

Ten four-credit courses (includng FILM 510: Film Analysis and Research, FILM 595: Advanced Screenwriting Tutorial, and FILM 507: Screenwriting Seminar) along with an eight-credit thesis are required for the MFA degree in screenwriting. The thesis for the MFA must be a feature-length original screenplay. At least 24 of the 40 classroom credits must be taken in creative courses. The MFA degree does not require a language exam, but students must pass a comprehensive final examination.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants to the program must hold an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. They must submit undergraduate transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample in addition to the application form and processing fee.

International Student Requirements:

In addition to the requirements for all applicants, international applicants who are not native speakers of the English language are required to submit TOEFL test scores and the proficiency in English form. Additionally, all international applicants are required to complete the Certification of Finances indicating their ability to pay tuition, fees, housing, and other living expenses while participating in the program.
